CIV ?

#1 Post by Seripmav » Fri Dec 02, 2011 2:02 pm

What do you think is the best CIV game? I recently joined Steam and see that some are available to buy, though not my beloved CIV 2; the only one I ever really played.

It looks like they have 3, 4, and 5 with accompanying expansions.

I've been playing Civ5 quite a bit. Though I had to limit myself lately because it just sucks me in and before I know it 6 hours have gone by.

I'd see if you can download some demos for the different versions.

Civ2 was great, but I've played more III than anything. I just downloaded the demo for V on Steam- It... is... awesome. Finally they rectify the problem with units that always bugged me.- Stacking, ugh. Now I am waiting for another sale.

I've played III and IV. I like IV a little better, but not picky really.

I'm going to recommend the original CIV, only because that is the only one not suggested yet, and I don't want your decision to get THAT easy...
I may not be perfect, but parts of me are pretty awesome.

I'm sure it'll go on sale at some point. I think they just had a black friday type sale, so maybe closer to Xmas.

Steam always has something on sale, however I don't watch it enough to say how often its a fairly big name game though. I've played Civ 5 quite a bit and I like the changes they've made to it. Like Harbinger, I'm glad they got rid of the stacking units. Since it's only 1 unit per hex, there is a bit more strategy involved. I haven't downloaded any of the additional packs to it, so I'm not sure what they bring.

CIV 5 is 50% off right now so I just downloaded it (Game of the Year edition for $25). Hope it plays as good as it looks. The biggest complaints I've read seem to be a with the multiplayer aspects not working real well (no hot seat?), but I wasn't planning on using any of that anyway (although pbem might have been fun to try). The expansion that just came out (or is about to) adds religion, more civs, and some other stuff.

I have the Game of the Year Edition as well. It is still fantastic. Huge time waster.

243 Hours played. Last played today.

Time waster? Sir, our definitions of 'waste' differ greatly!

So for you guys that have played Civilization V, what is your favorite ruler to play? And what is your favorite route to victory, map size, and map type?

I like the warrior based rulers, such as Rome and Songhai. I tried winning as India but got steamrolled by Egypt. Currently I am playing Russia and they get great strategic resource bonuses.

I've managed to win with all victory conditions: Domination, Cultural, Diplomatic and Science. I've also beaten the level 5 AI but I can't quite compete with level 6 yet. The bonuses enjoyed by the AI are just too much for me yet. I think you need a good map 'drop' and decent, non warring neighbors. I always seem to end up next to Alexander or Montezuma and before I have three units on the map I am at war with them. *shrug*

I'd love to give multiplayer a try sometime. Perhaps team play against the AI?

Well I'm not that advanced, heck Im only playing the super easy level 1 to learn the ropes (I'm the Polynesians). At first I wasn't sure, only played for a few turns. Then the next day I decided to keep at it, you know, to at least give it a fair shot, bam 3 hrs gone. So a day or two later I thought "Well, I don't know. But I should give it just a little bit more to make sure because there are some things I don't get and I'm not sure I like the graphic overlays." My next thought I remembered was "Oh shit I need to get to bed!"

"Just one more turn..." is back.
