Curious to know if there are any MTG players out there? I've been contemplating on repacking a series (Tempest block for instance) of Magic cards into envelopes and conducting a re-packed booster draft tournament.

I see that some of you have Magic in you collections, but have no idea how much anyone likes it. When most people talk about Magic, they refer to how expensive it is. Well, that his true, but it is still a great game and there are ways of enjoying MTG without trying to keep up with the latest sets.

Let me know please. If there is any interst, I'll repack some stuff for some Thursday down the road.

I have a few cards and quite enjoyed it, but never had anyone to play with. I think I have a deck or two made up.

I played MTG from it's beginning up through the...Ice Age??...booster. At that point, the game had introduced way too many special abilities and rules to keep track of unless a person had loads of time and money. Which I did not.

I also grew tired of the standard 1v1 duel format. I enjoyed team duels much more but could never find others interested in playing team games.

It also didn't help that I had developed a Goblin deck that my circle of friends found impossible to stop so they all lost interest in playing.

I think any of the collectable games are hard to play with a limited group of people. If you don't spend the money and time needed to develop a good deck/army, you consistently get your ass handed to you which is no fun. But if you spend the time and money to develop a deck/army that kicks ass....the other players have no fun and stop playing. There has to be this careful balance of investing enough time and money....but not too much.

I never seem to get that balance right, which is why I stopped playing collectable games.

You could expand your group of players so you're always taking on new challengers...but you always end up running into a bunch of assholes or poor sports.

Good post Oberon. I agree with you on many points. What I'm proposing is a booster draft which adds a bit more luck to the process, but eliminates a lot of the problems you are stating.

My Magic experience to date has been casual one-on-one play with my brother-in-law. We would see each other and play about 10 times a year. That is, before I found board games. I'm glad that we found board games because it has allowed us to include our wives into the playing process. But, my Magic collection still calls to me. Especially, since my wife is very, very intimidated by it and I no longer play with my brother-in-law.

The way a booster draft works, is that I randomly repack some envelopes such that they would be similar to what a booster pack would be if you bought it from the store. We then each take 3 envelopes and each of us opens one of them at a time. Pick a card and then pass the rest to the person on your left/right. They would pick a card, and so on. This is very much like Fairy Tale if you've ever played that. After everyone has their chosen cards, you limit yourself to 40 of them, and add land (somewhere around 16-19) to complete your deck. The remaining 5 cards are then your sideboard that you can swap in/out between matches. A full tournament consists of three matches for 8 players.

By using this format, you eliminate most of the issues with disparity in collections. I have a HUGE collection, so that is why I'm offering this as an option for the group. The only limiting factor then is experience, which you can gain if you like it.

If you build it, they will play...

I'm in.

Some friends of mine in Michigan used to buy bulk generics, pool all the cards they bought and made a bunch of theme decks. Each person had 10 to 20 decks and would play one randomly each game night they played. when that battle was over, they took the next deck randomly and played again. If they did not like a deck they would trade it whole or dump it back into the pool and make a new one.

They played every other week that way for a year or two.

I'm in if I could ever make it to game night. I think Seripmav is making more than I am these days.

I have a crate of MTG cards but lost interest at some point after Ice Age as well. As was stated..too many rule changes and they kept me from using my older cards for the tournaments which irritated me.

As a change of pace I would play a night of it. I am just never going to buy another card.

I love magic and still have usable decks for a friendly (read non-tournament) environment and I will definitely play.

Drafting is fun, so count me in. Maybe I will try to dig out my cards as well.

Cheers!

Thanks all. Unless there are any objections, I'm chosing Portal for the first re-pack then. Sounds like a few of you are new, casual, or outdated players. Portal is the simplest format and intended for new Magic players. Should be ready for some night in July.

I stopped playing around the Urza's ones..... but anyway... I'd be glad to play some time as well.

I think my last deck was from the Ice Age as well.

I stopped playing when I was working at a comic book shop and we were having a tourny, and someone stole my deck and the only people in the tourny were regulars that I knew quite well.
Anyways, I'd be willing to play/do whatever.

I should have this ready by next week.

Here is something that is a bit fun. Questions are weird:

Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.

Apparently I'm allied with Seripmav against Gt & Harb. This is not what I expected.

Cheers!

Hmmmm......not what I expected either.

Well....at least I don't have any arch-enemies within the Poly-U group! :)
