So, is this going to start sometime now that Oshcon has drawn to a close?

GT...I have some insider information that says this was in the works even before Oshcon.... I was lucky enough to help "focus group" a couple of potential logo designs a few weeks ago. Atom is on the ball with a domain name registered already even. Nothing there yet, but soon enough I'd wager.

Just to revive an old thread:

The founding meeting of Tabletop Minions will be held at the House of Heroes (downtown Oshkosh, mind the Juggalos) on Tuesday, December 8th at 6:30 p.m. There will not be punch and pie.

In the future, TM meetings will be held at House of Heroes on the second Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. The meetings will start with some quick club business, then a short presentation about a game, a painting technique, a local convention, or whatever is interesting and relates to the club. Then, people can leave, or sit around and chat, or break up into groups and play some games.

The website and forum may be ready by the first meeting, but if not, then shortly after.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Yeah, about that... Unfortunately, doing something in Oshkosh on a weeknight is not possible for me. With the things I have going on each weeknight and having a wife/daughter to spend time with, I really wouldn't be able to commit to something along these lines.

You are of course free to run your TM group however you want, I'm just giving you my opinion. Please don't see the below as anything but my viewpoint. ;)

House of Heroes closes at 7pm on Tuesday nights, so I am assuming you have something worked out so you can have people there after the store is closed. Even then, there is not a lot of time for Warmachines on a weeknight. With games like Warmachine, you really can't do anything but a very quick skirmish in that time. And even then, that is only like one game per event, so if you have those once per month that is going to be a long time in between matches.

For that matter, running the events at those times pretty much eliminates 75% of people with families - which is why Chimera's minigaming events are usually ages 12-20 (based on attendance, not as a rule). The reason why I have never attended the Weekly miniatures gaming night at Chimera's in Appleton is that they start at 6:00 or 6:30, but only go to 9:00. Generally that's fine for learning games, but if you want to talk or do anything but rush to a match you will generally run out of time.

I work until 6:00 or 6:30 each night, plus travel time wouldn't even get me to Oshkosh until 7:00-ish. I could try and make weekend events, but I will not be able to participate in anything like it during the week. Sorry atom, good luck to you!

Once a month. Got it. Might want to auto-ping us through the new forum to remind us for the meetings, if that is possible.

Otherwise I'm there.

Just finally moving this over to here.

Feel free to post events for this in the Game Night/Meet-up, or Gamapalooza/All Day Event forums.

We do have the ability to stay later than 7 p.m., as Tuesday nights are when a bunch of us usually get together and play Star Wars Miniatures, and we're usually there until 9-10 p.m. So that isn't an issue.

The idea of the meetings isn't really the end all and be all of the club, quite the contrary. Mainly it's a place for people who are new to the group to be able to find out more about the group and maybe see a neat demonstration of a new game or a painting technique or something along those lines. It's mainly a real-space anchor point for face-to-face. The main crux of the group will be the website and forums. People will be able to join the forum and find people to play with, then they can get together and play with those people whenever and wherever their schedules will allow. In a perfect world we'd have way more people using the website than we would have attending the meetings. I'm trying to come up with an easy enough way to maybe video-tape the 'demonstrations' at the monthly meetings so people who can't make it will still be able to view them through YouTube or something. The upside of the meetings is that it is a meeting point that people can use to make face-to-face when necessary.

Example: I own AT-43 stuff and I don't know anybody else who does (this is true, actually). I mention on the forum that I'm looking for people interested in playing and that I can provide the minis (this is also true and not just an example). Someone I don't know responds and says they'd be interested in playing. I could then suggest a meeting between the two of us at the monthly meeting so I can determine whether this person is someone I would like to let in my house or not. If we can't make the monthly meeting, we could also always schedule a meeting at the coffeeshop or whatever. The main idea I wanted to get across here is that a person can be a vital member of the club and never show up at a monthly meeting, but it felt weird to start a club without at least one real meeting per month.

If some of the people want to have an 'event' to get together and play Warmthingy, for instance, they would probably coordinate on the forums and determine the best time and place for all people interested, and yes, it would probably be on a weekend. But if you're just looking for a single person to play against (and many minis games are 1-on-1 games) then you could get together whenever it would work. Personally, I'm hoping for a Warmachine event at some point in the future.

The meeting isn't the only time people will get together and play. Like I said, it's already our Star Wars Miniatures night, so those guys (whether they're in the club or not) will be there playing anyway. If someone wanted to bring some Wings of War and run a quick pickup/show off the game, that'd work, too. But the club is mainly a front [strike]for the mob[/strike] for getting people to the forums and having them set up games with other people whenever it's best for them, from simple 1-on-1 games to big tourneys, if they want.

I hope I've made it more clear, and I hope all of you (who are interested) can be involved. Just know this: attendance at the monthly meetings is in no way even necessary.

Man. I wish I knew someone who could play AT-43 with me and provide the minis...

Hey, the Tabletop Minions web site is up and running, and tonight's the first meeting. Strap on your snowshoes and stop by: 6:30 p.m. @ House of Heroes. 2nd Tuesday of every month.

www.tabletopminions.org

I'll probably make a separate post about this, too.

Can't make this one, but I DO plan to attend in the future. I have to dust off my Brick Wars rule books...

I DID already join the forums though, w00t!
