So what do you guys think of the upcoming edition? I read 3 lengthy reviews about it on aintitcoolnews and it seems like it could be awesome.

I'll be honest here, I'm seriously thinking of picking it up.

I have absolutely no idea how it fairs to previous versions or other games but I just feel that it'd be fun to have around. I have read up on it a little and been to the WOTC forums to read the debates; and the changes (the few that I understand) have all fallen into the "good" category for me.

There are purists that would hate me for saying that but whatever. The last time I played regularly - lo those many dark paths ago, when magic swords spoke to their masters and... oops - we used a version so heavily modified it didn't matter much anyway.

What type of gamer are you?: RPG
I might pick up the main books, if ONLY because I have had every OTHER edition of D&D...(except 3.5....what the heck is 3.5 supposed to be other than a slap in the face)

So just to have a nice spot in my bookshelf with the entire span of D&D....

I'm still a devotee of 1st & 2nd edition only. If they're willing to reimburse me for the thousands (yes, THOUSANDS) of dollars worth of 1E and 2E stuff I have, I'd be more than willing to pick it up.

I've heard good and bad stuff about it, though. Mostly good. I haven't actually role-played in quite a while. The last games were Warhammer FRP, D20 Modern and the old school, West End d6 Star Wars game.

(And now, the evil atom has sucked me into the world of Star Wars minis & I'm spending far too much $$ on that).

Wow, Derf, I just noticed the Conan signiture. Bravo!

What I like about it, is what I've read it's going to lend itself a lot more to just having fun with it. No more number crunching, no more min/maxing, just plain old orc-bashin' fun. The encounter system sounds sweet too. Plus, online gaming built right into the system, wooooo-hooo.

Hmmm... Maybe? I've never played it.
I'm hoping Fantasy Flight will make a 4.0 compatable Midnight setting. That relm was the best.

I just came across a podcast featuring people trying out the 4th edition rules.
http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/drfe/20080530&authentic=true

It features Gabe and Tycho from Penny-Arcade, a webcomic/blog, and Scott Kurtz from PVP another webcomic. The three of them run the gamut of experience with D+D: Tycho is an experienced player, Scott used to play years ago, and Gabe has never played before. The first podcast covers them choosing their names, starting their adventure, and having their first encounter. It's 42 minutes long, and I think all three are funny guys, making the whole listening experience enjoyable.

Since it is D&D my official opinion is BOO!!! BOO!!! Evil game.

However...I will likely at least look at the pdfs.

So that brings up the subject, if someone buys it, who will play it?

We don't ever play roleplaying on our game nights. Well, there was that once...

I would like to point out that this problem is very similar to the reason we typically don't open a game that no one has ever played and stand around while the rules are read. It takes too much time when there are many other games that someone will already know how to play. I don't think it necessarily has anything to do with role playing. It's just that role playing has more "front end" requirements so to speak.

If someone had the rules memorized (I mean really knew them well), had the game all set up and ready to go when people arrived (characters, maps, dice, cheat sheets), and put in the proper preparation and boundries for the adventure (like a good DM should do), I believe it'd probably go over pretty well.

I was at B&N (that's Boobs & Nookie for you blokes) the other week and they had the first new adventure Keep on the Shadowfell http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=pr ... /217187400. It wasn't in shrink so I was able to open it up and look at the maps. It looked fun. The only thing that stopped me from buying it was the family wracking up expenses with all their stupid "books".

I probably will not pick them up this weekend but it's on my list of interests.

I was going to say something cool about Yoda putting me in my place here....

but I think I will wait for some random Yid comment like "how can you be ready for anything when there is chicken grilling in Neshkoro this weekend... I may as well have Skittlebrau borrow my peacock binoculars."

My comment: History at the PU states that there have been two times that RPG games have been played. The question is, was the first time ever finished? The second was not.

Do you smell chicken? I'll be right there, dear.

Just want to mention that I'd be willing to give it a shot if someone wanted to explain/DM it.

Well... I bought it. It looks awesome. Very streamlined. No THAC0!! Horray! Saving throws are replaced!! Horray! The entire Spell system is overhauled: HORRAY!!! I gotta say, as of right now just reading stuff over, I'm a big fan.
