John Wick

#1 Post by Seripmav » Tue Oct 28, 2014 9:59 am

I saw John Wick this past weekend and really enjoyed it. It is definitely worth seeing if you are into "Jason Statham" action type of movies, and I always like Keanu Reeves anyway. In a nutshell: John Wick is a "retired" badass and some people just aren't smart enough to not cross his path/piss him off (has this been done before? lol). It has some interesting underworld settings and the shootsting parts are hella fun. It doesn't reach the level of Safe (one of my all time faves), but has good directing and pacing.
Does anyone know if this is based on something or just a regular shoot 'em up?

I think it's an original premise. Well, not necessarily "original", but not based on any comic book or anything like that.

From what I've read afterward it was directed by some stuntmen and they made larger chunks of the fight scenes continuous. This way there aren't as many cuts back-and-forth that most movies use to 'cheat' to make the action appear faster. Rather you get smoother, more realistic fighting scenes like you are there watching it. I thought something felt different (in a good way) about the action so I'm interested in seeing it again sometime and watching for that.

Now I will have to go see it...

Dang!

Thanks Seripmav! I was wondering if this would be any good. Now I'll probably see it at the theater instead of waiting for it to hit Netflix (and for me to promptly forget about it).

Yeah I'm typically like you. "Eh, another action flick" and wait for it on Netflix. But my son wanted to go because of some tie-in to a video game he plays and I was pleasantly surprised. I don't go to the movies as often as I would like and I'm so used to laying on my couch that I forget how oftentimes the big screen really can make for a better experience.

Is the game payday 2?

Because that's a cool game, and I think I remember seeing some advertising on my steam loading screen about "John Wick" being in the game now, but didn't put 2 and 2 together until now.

Hehe yeah that's the one. I don't play it and I think the connection between the two is a little obfuscated, but whatever sells.

It's actually quite fun, but I've always been a fan of "heist" movies.

The problem is that you need decent teamwork to try any strategy other than "shoot the shit out of everything!" and as a casual player without a lot of free time, I get stuck in the random loading rooms with a bunch of people who either don't give a shit about working as a team, or is mad because you don't have the strategy 100% figured out already, since they have played 100+ hours and are just slumming in the waiting rooms to feel better about themselves by shitting on the "newbs".

ANY game that requires some teamwork fits this mold of course, which is where it sucks for me, because I really like teamwork games.

Teamwork?! In a game?

That sounds like... CO-OP!!!

...what's with that?

The ultimate co-op type strategy were the old raids in Warcraft. 40 people all on vent for hours on end trying to kill one boss. "More Dots!!!" "Heal... HEAL!!!" "Run! You're the Bomb!" *shudder* The newer ones aren't quite so bad (25 man max) but I rarely do them now. Usually I just wait until I completely out-level and out-gear a dungeon then go solo to explore it.

Rift has a good system for random pick-up raids... Most of the really good ones have tiered instances, so all the really cool ones can be enjoyed at different power levels, and they have a mentoring system, so you can temporarily de-buff yourself down to whatever level you want to run through. It's also a great way to make sure you stay on the XP curve when exploring areas that you have out-leveled, or want to hang out with some new friends or alts, you just mentor down to the correct level. Keep all of your spells and weapons and everything in place, but everything nerfs down to the proper level. You can keep with your normal fighting style and everything without having to "gear down" to avoid overpowering everything.

\:D/

But yeah, that's why I never raided much. Couldn't devote the 6 days a week playtime to get in a decent raid group, and pick-up groups were a joke for anything larger than 5 man.

Sounds interesting and yeah, I think the amount of time I spent on those big raids was ridiculous. It was much more pleasant raiding with just friends. Warcraft now has several different types of raids with the flex raid (I think) scaling to how many people are in the raid. Plus a 'pick-up' version where you don't get as good loot but the encounters are dumbed down so a group of strangers can do them without having to think too much.

Sort of like a scaling co-op board game ;)

Now that Guardtroll is well and truly scared away with all of this co-op talk, we can finally start planning his surprise birthday party...
