TrueBlood on HBO

#1 Post by Seripmav » Thu Sep 11, 2008 9:46 am

I'm not a huge fan of shows that carry plots from week to week. Usually I end up either missing some, or half the season is "filler" leading up to the season finally that asks more questions than it answers. I didn't see the Sopranoes so I could be wrong about these HBO series'.

Anyway... last night I was flipping around and caught the series premire of TrueBlood on HBO. OK this one I'm going to watch.

What's it about? Glad you asked!

Vampires. That's right, vampires. The year is current or a bit in the future when Synthiblood is developed. All the properties of blood so it's a big medical breakthrough (they are trying to do it now by the way). It has the side effect of bringing vampires "out of the coffin" so to speak because they no loner have to kill people to survive.

So we have a backdrop of a small Louisiana town encountering it's first "out" vampire. Prejudice and fear grip it's average citizens while convienence stores stock 6-packs of Synthiblood.

In the first episode we had topics like:
-Sex with vampires.
-Vamptramps - whores who get paid extra by vampires to let them suck some of their blood.
-Vblood - which is vampire blood. Apparently drinking it rejuvinates a mortal while be addicting; so theres a black market for it and the hunters are now the hunted.
-Our main character, a waitress who has the odd ability to hear peoples thoughts.
-Our protagonists brother who accidentally commits murder (of the girl hes doing while they're getting off on watching a tape of her having sex with a vampire.)
-Our protagonists grandmother who is interested in meeting the vampire to get him to speak at her library club about the civil war (They live hundreds of years so they'd make great eye witnesses. I thought that was just a great idea.)

Acting is great. You totally read the look on the brothers face as at first he's repulsed by the thought that his date had sex with a vampire, yet he's intrigued, curious, and strangely turned on by it. And its such a nice twist that the fearsome vampires are almost to be pitied in thier quest to blend in with normal society. They aren't killers so much as they had no other way to survive until now - or are they? (One line was "Why would they want Slimfast when they've been eating steak for so long.)

So 2 fangs up for me so far!

EDIT: click on synopsis and then the arrow to go back to the first episode to read about last nights show. Answered one of my questions about the chain around the guys neck.

Rachael ahs the promo poster for this show on her wall.... It is just a set of red lips, with a hint of fang and a drip of blood. The poster is cool, but I will NOT be letting her watch the show though....

thanks for the quick review Ser, I was planning on checking this out anyway, but I did not realize it started yet.

Yeah it has all the sex and violence of your typical HBO drama, so not kid friendly. We'll see where it goes but so far I find the premiss and setting interesting.

I might have to switch from Shotime to HBO for this!

I only got Shotime so I can watch "Penn and Teller's Bullshit!"

I like the Penn and Teller show though the only episode I ever caught in entirety was the porn one. Odd. Anyway, whether you agree with their stances or not (sometimes they do slant things ever so slightly) I like the way they go after the rip off artists.

Penn's Satellite radio show is pretty good too... a bit more of a one way slant on the politics, but still a solid show.

Good call on TrueBlood Ser, and thanks for bringing to our attention! I switched to HBO and caught episode 4 on Tuesday night.

Since I'm a slow tech adopter, I didn't realize I could go to On Demand and watch the other episodes. I watched episode 1 last night and half of episode 2.

I'm not sure how I feel about the Mentalist character though. I suppose if you can suspend disbelief to accept vampires, a viewer should be able to suspend disbelief to go along with a mentalist, but meh. I dunno.

I wonder if they'll incorporate werewolves and other supernatural beings.

yeah...the mind reading from a "normal" person is a bit off putting..... but still it's a great show....

Sookie's friend who has been helping Jason in that last episode... i forget her name.... but she is just about the AWESOMEST person on that show...I didn't like her at first... but after this last episode, she is now my #1 favorite.

Yeah, I wasn't sure about Tara at first either. She was close to being my favorite until last night's episode when LaFayette the cook went off on those rednecks in the eatery. "Everything on this table got AIDS!"

HAHAHA! =D>

So yeah, the books....even BETTER. I just finished with the second one, and am picking up the third this afternoon.

Some changes of course, but the series does follow the first book pretty close so far.

I recommend them to anyone who likes the show.... and knows how to read.

Sookie Stackhouse...

Really?

No, really!?! Wow. That makes me, still not want to watch it! \:D/

So, can the waitress/mind-reader read a vampires thoughts? Do the un-dead have normal *readable* brains? Or is this something that carries over into the afterlife/supernatural-life.

Cause if it aint believeable, I can't watch it. :)
