Microsoft will be offering the Windows 7 Beta to the first 2.5 million downloads. It was initially going to be available yesterday (1/10) however they have delayed it to add more servers.

It's possible that it could be made available today.

Once available you should be able to download it here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/.

Oh, also... The Beta expires on August 1, 2009. To continue using your PC, please be prepared to reinstall a prior version of Windows. So I wouldn't recommend installing this on a primary PC.

I got both the 64bit and the 32bit version. Haven't loaded them yet, but I am looking forward to trying them out.

Did you do this Lartarin? I heard it was pretty good and they changed the things people/programers didn't like about Vista. More like a super charged XP.

I suppose this is the type of thing that causes games like SC2 to be delayed because Blizzard probably has to get W7 in the shop to make sure SC runs properly on it.

I also heard it might not take YEARS to develop like previous incarnations, since from what I have been reading is they sort of added the glitz of Vista with the "more stable" XP platform.....sort of.

So it might be out this decade sometime.

I downloaded it, however I didn't install it on anything yet. I heard that it's supposed to be a little lighter and should work better with older machines than vista did. So, I may try to stick it on my old desktop and see what happens.

I guess Microsoft said that is the only beta, so there is rumor that it will be released shortly after the August 1st date.

Just an update, the Beta is over and Microsoft has now pushed out the Release Candidate for Windows 7. Again, for those interested you can download it here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/window ... nload.aspx

If you already have the beta installed, you'll probably want to wipe the drive and install the RC clean.

The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start. To avoid interruption, you’ll need to install a non-expired version of Windows before March 1, 2010.

I just bought a 2nd hard drive (1 TB for under $90!) so I'm going to install it as a dual boot and try to run it as my primary system. I'll try to keep you updated.

I am running the RC right now at home. It is pretty nice. It boots faster than XP or Vista, I have not had one hang-up yet, and everything I have tried is completely supported so far. They might have finally figured it out.

So I could update my PC without having to deal with Vista altogether? Sweet!

Interesting that they're taking the chance that people will still buy a PC intending to upgrade. Most times when there's information out like that sales plummet until the new product comes out. But maybe PC sales are poor anyway (because of Vista) and they want to get maximum hype going into Christmas. I haven't read a single bad thing about 7 yet.
This is perfect timing for me. A new computer just in time for SC2.

I have been using the 7 RC since it came out. Not one bad thing to say about it. I will be glad to see it get a full release, so we can move past Vista like it was Windows Me......
